Simply put, although conservatives are inclined to blame the Democratic crooks who have pirated the federal government for the nation's woes, please consider the following. Citizens have only themselves to blame for the mess in DC, IMO. More specifically, citizens have evidently not been teaching the Constitution and its history to their children for many generations, particularly the enumerated principle of state sovereignty evidenced by the 10th Amendment. Consequently, special interest groups who control the media have been able to usurp state sovereignty. They have done so by misleading voters to think that the Oval Office is some kind of throne room at the expense of state sovereignty.

The following link provides more details as to how voters have shot themselves in the foot with big, corrupt federal government as a consequence of the ill-conceived, anti-state sovereignty 16th and 17th Amendments.
