Ideals are the basis of much seen in the political world, though ironically ideology rarely is realized in a pure manifestation – this is a basic fact of nature. Black Bear Ranch, a commune in Northern California is an iconic example of the ideas of collective effort, concepts cherished by those who support the Obama big government agenda.

Black Bear, where the motto for decades has been “Free Land for Free People”, is however a counterexample to what Obama proposes, in a very important aspect.

One major draw for those seduced by national healthcare and most big government programs is the notion of a safety net. Fans of big brother tout the protection he offers from the world’s unpleasantries- disease, hunger, lack of medical care, invasion.

Centralizers take solace in the idea that ‘something is out there taking care of them’. This, however, is in direct opposition to the reality of a place like Black Bear.

Black Bear CommuneThe hippies, collectivists and other freedom loving folks who lived at Black Bear Ranch at various times relied on each other and their combined potential in order to survive.

There was no safety net- there was nothing protecting them from the ills of this world except for their neighbors. This is a fundamental difference from the twisted bastardization of communal well being currently being used to sell Obamacare and the other facets of the big government movement in DC.

Those at Black Bear accepted their personal responsibility, for had they not, they would have perished in any number of ways. The idea that some government entity was looking out for them was nonexistent.

It was this lack of government intervention that brought many to Black Bear in the first place, for they knew that freedom, well being and community are all things that no government can provide.
