Today, the Virginia House of Delegates passed 4 bills proposing to make state law the right of a person to choose health care providers:

No resident of this Commonwealth, regardless of whether he has or is eligible for health insurance coverage under any policy or program provided by or through his employer, or a plan sponsored by the Commonwealth or the federal government, shall be required to obtain or maintain a policy of individual insurance coverage.

Senate Bill 417 (SB417), Senate Bill 283 (SB283), and Senate Bill 311 (SB311) all passed by wide margins. All had previously passed the State Senate and should be on their way to the Governor’s desk for signature soon.

Virginia is now the 2nd state to have both houses pass a Health Care Freedom Act. In 2009, the Arizona legislature passed HCR2014. It’s a state constitutional amendment, so it will need approval by voters in November 2010 before becoming law.

Also passed today in Virginia is House Bill 10 (HB10), the House version of the Health Care Freedom Act. It’s been transmitted to the Senate for further consideration.
