What is the purpose of a state government? Historically, and even in modern times, countries with states or provinces we’re ruled by a strong central government. Any rules that were passed by the central government applied to each state. So, do we really need states? The Founders intended to make American states completely different than any states of the past, or even the present.

Compounding Liberty

The United States has both a Federal and State government prescribed by “We the People”. The Federal government is a Republican form of government, and every state is required to maintain a Republican form of government.

Why? The purpose of 2 Republics within a single nation was to decentralize power and protect the liberty of the people. The Founders called this group of Republics (States) inside a national Republic (Federal) a “compound Republic” in his Federalist Paper #51 (http://www.foundingfathers.info/federalistpapers/fedindex.htm).

We should call it “Compounding Liberty”.
