While I favor the recreational use and abuse of drugs being illegal, I cannot see how their could rightly be any federal laws against such, anymore than against alcohol, without a Constitutional amendment. I suppose one could argue such laws are in the interest of the general welfare, but that's a stretched application at best.
However I fully support the right of States to legislate concerning such. It's not that I want drugs legalized. Such is immoral, destructive of both the individual, family, and community, sinful even, and should be illegal. Yet, it should be made so in legal, constitutional, American fashion.
Besides, the issue of personal choice, taken apart from the counter balance of societal good, is a slippery slope that leads to anarchism. In short … the States can, and I believe should, exercise authority in criminalizing such. Yet, it's a matter left to the States themselves, respectively.
The war on drugs is beginning to seem like a big waste of time and, dare I say, unamerican. Its essentially a war on someone's personal choice over their own lives which is why it is unamerican. Don't get me wrong. Drugs are bad for you and should never be done but should I or anyone else have the right to make that choice for you?
