This is a case in point as to why the federal government should stop meddling in scientific research.

Although it’s sad to think about (as is butchering animals for our food), I think animal research is definitely necessary; But when government subsidies are brought to bear, political cronyism does additional harm to animals that cannot possibly be justified by an offset in human well-being.

Not just that, but there are some people who are ethically opposed to animal research under any circumstance.  Whether you agree with them or not, forcing such a person to contribute money to pay for animal research, involuntarily, is reprehensible.
