Collier County, Florida has taken measures to protect the safety and security of its citizens, passing a resolution that will nullify any federal gun control measures in that county.

The resolution was passed on Feb. 26 with a unanimous vote and declares ‘that no county resources be used in the implementation of any Federal law, executive order or executive directive that infringe on the right to keep and bear arms.”

The resolution also calls for the state government to follow their lead and be vigilant in defending the liberties of Floridians saying, “The Collier County Board of Commissioners calls upon the Governor and the Florida Legislature to immediately pass an act to nullify the implementation within the State of Florida of any Federal law, executive order or regulations restricting the right to keep and bear arms.”

This shows that local resistance is tremendously important and often paves the way for legislation at the state level. Local resolutions and state legislation go hand in hand with each other. When state legislators see counties passing initiatives, they take notice. They realize that if they do not take action on key issues such as defending the Second Amendment, they may suffer the consequences the next time they are up for re-election.

Florida has emerged as a leader in resisting federal gun control. Last month, all 67 of their sheriffs signed a letter pledging to never comply with unconstitutional laws that aim to disarm their citizens. This marks a rare instance where bipartisanship within government has worked in the favor of the American people! It seems that defending freedom has proven more important than typical political gamesmanship, and we must act to ensure that this continues not just in Florida but the rest of the country as well.

ACTION ITEMS

If you live in Florida, please capitalize on the momentum from this resolution and urge your State Senator and Representative to support the Tenth Amendment Center’s model legislation – the Second Amendment Preservation Act.
