A Slap in the Face of Liberty: Gov. Nixon attempts to block 2nd Amendment Preservation Act one day after Independence Day
originally posted at Missouri Tenth
HB 436 establishes the Second Amendment Preservation Act, which rejects all Federal acts that infringe on a Missouri citizens’ rights under the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Ironically, this bill was just vetoed by Governor Nixon one day after Independence Day – a day for Missourians to celebrate Independence from the tyranny of an Empire seeking to impose their ideals on the colonies (Read Gov. Nixon’s veto letter here). Coincidence? And although it would have been nice for Nixon to allow HB 436 to become law, the veto wasn’t unexpected – despite Nixon’s campaign claims to be pro 2nd Amendment. HB 436 passed with enough votes to override the veto in September, so that’s where we must now turn our attention.
But first, let’s take a look at an interesting article from Hays Daily News (Kansas), where the paper praised those States standing up for the Constitution. “Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback recently signed a measure threatening felony charges against federal agents who enforce certain firearms laws in his state. Missouri legislators recently enacted the Second Amendment Preservation Act, which in part reads not only is it the right of the state Legislature to check federal overreaching but ‘the Missouri general assembly is duty-bound to watch over and oppose every infraction of those principles which constitute the basis of the Union of the States, because only a faithful observance of those principles can secure the nation’s existence and the public happiness.’”
And let’s not forget that Jefferson and James Madison, in 1798 and 1799 in the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions, said, “Resolved, That the several States composing, the United States of America, are not united on the principle of unlimited submission to their general government … and whensoever the general government assumes undelegated powers, its acts are unauthoritative, void, and of no force.”
So although Missourians may have less and less reason to celebrate “Independence” as their own Empire seeks to strip away the liberties of our communities – and leaders like Governor Nixon are failing to properly interpose or stand up for our community – there is still plenty of hope!
For instance, there are those Missouri leaders who are vowing to continue the fight to stand up for Missourians rights to protect their families through the 2nd Amendment. As stated in the Kansas City Star, one such individual is Missouri House Speaker Tim Jones, who “says he wants to try to override Gov. Jay Nixon’s veto of a gun-rights bill passed by the Legislature.”
Ron Calzone at Missouri First also writes that, “Between now and then, we must plaster newspapers with letters to editors denouncing Nixon’s decision to ignore the plain meaning of the 2nd Amendment and supporting state Reps and Senator’s in an effort to override the veto.”
