Last month, Missouri state Senator John Lamping (R-Ladue) introduced a bill for the 2014 session that would stop compliance with President Obama’s Common Core Education standards.

SB514 would prohibit the Missouri state board of education and other state educational departments from implementing Common Core State Standards or any substantially similar federal learning standards.

“Any actions taken to adopt or implement the Common Core State Standards as of the effective date of this section are void.”

While touted as a state initiative, the federal government is deeply involved in both the formulation and implementation of Common Core. Constitutionally, the federal government should not be involved in education at all.

Many privacy advocates, as well as home school leaders, have grave concerns about the further invasion of privacy and centralization of power with the federal law. It appears that there are data mining efforts made through the law as well as further erosion of state control over education.

Missouri is following in the footsteps of other states such as Indiana, New Hampshire and Florida by pushing back against the latest onerous federal power-grab. Largely unbeknownst to the American public, Common Core gives the feds the power to collect all kinds of data from children including Social Security numbers, blood type, records of school attendance, supposed learning disabilities, religious affiliation, disciplinary records, parents’ income information. The curriculum also eschews classic literature in favor of drab, government technical manuals.

ACTION ITEMS

If you live in Missouri, contact your legislators HERE and politely urge for them to support SB514.

If you live in a state that has not passed legislation stopping Common Core, please urge your state legislators to introduce a bill similar to Missouri’s.
