Editor’s note: the following is a short statement written for the Missouri legislature in support of a bill that would limit drone surveillance without a warrant
The Tenth Amendment Center urges passage of HB1204, the “Preserving Freedom from Unwarranted Surveillance Act.”
This legislation takes important steps to ensure the privacy of the People of Missouri.
With the rapid advance of technology, it is inevitable that drones will become commonplace. Government agencies, along with private individuals and organizations, can use unmanned aircraft to great advantage. But drones come with inherent dangers to privacy. Without common-sense parameters around their use, they can easily become tools to violate basic civil liberties. By passing HB1204, the Missouri legislature will carve out space for legitimate drone use while limiting the possibility of unwarranted surveillance.
We strongly urge a yes vote on HB1204.
