Last night I spoke at a gathering of activists hosted by FreedomWorks in Richmond, VA. The crowd was impressive, more than 130 people on a Thursday night were packed into the basement of a bar in Shockoe Bottom.

They weren’t there to see me of course, former House majority leader, Dick Armey, was the headliner. But they were fired up, they were organized, and they were very responsive to my message about the need for principled leadership at the state level.

I explained that although the battle against government health care is still raging in Congress, Virginians have to be prepared for the worst. That means being ready to follow in the footsteps of Arizona, Alaska, and Kansas whose legislatures have already said that the voters, and not the federal government, will make health care decisions in their states.

When I said that Virginia voters need to elect state representatives who see their first duty as the protection of constitutional freedoms from federal encroachment, heads were enthusiastically nodding all around the room.

The only reps worth electing in any state are those willing to be the first line of defense between citizens and the federal government when it comes to the persistent debasement of our Constitution. If the feds want to destroy the freedom and livelihood of the voters, and enslave our children with crushing debt, they should at least have to go through our state legislators first.

All in all, it was very exciting to see the energy level in the room, and to meet the activists and members of organizations already flourishing in Virginia.

I’m optimistic about a bright future for this country as long as we keep waking each other up and pushing ourselves off the couch and into the streets, to fight for the most important thing we have: Our constitutional freedoms.
