On the evening of July 2, the City Council of Wellington, Kan., unanimously passed a resolution in Support of the Second Amendment.

The Tenth Amendment Center applauds every city, county, and state that proactively defends their citizens’ natural right to self defense by enacting state laws, city ordinances, and honorary resolutions which preserve and defend this unalienable right.

The resolution passed 6-0

In April of this year, with more than 50 co-sponsors, SB 102, was signed by Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback. The law declares “any act, law, treaty, order, rule or regulation of the government of the United States which violates the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States is null and void in the state of Kansas.”

This legislation has been deemed, “The Strictest Second Amendment Protection Law” in the nation. So, why exactly would a small town of 8,000 citizens go to the trouble of preparing a resolution, when their right of self defense is clearly protected by the new state law? Could it be Patriotism?  Perhaps Stick it to the Man Syndrome?

How about as a “jobs creation” resolution?

In an article, published by Sumner News Cow, Tracy McCue points out, “While the Second Amendment has been around for a while, the Council was cognizant of what such a resolution, at this point in time, could do for the city of Wellington, Kansas.”

He continues:

“Wellington Economic Director Cody Sims began drafting and mailing out a number of letters to several gun manufacturing plants” [within Maryland and my native state of Colorado] “where gun control legislation has taken effect and raised the ire of the firearm companies [not to mention the ire of the citizens] within those state boundaries.”

Wellington City Council member, B.J. Tracy said, “an official resolution reaffirming a citizen’s right to bear arms, will only strengthen Wellington’s cause, if a firearm manufacturer would decide to make a move.”

The resolution states, “ Whereas the Council of the City of Wellington, Kansas desires to adopt a formal Resolution to preserve and defend the individual right to keep and bear arms; the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution; and Section Four of the Kansas Bill of Rights.”

In the language of this resolution, the City Council also “calls upon the United States Congress, the Governor of the State of Kansas, and the Kansas Legislature, and all elected officials of the State of Kansas to preserve and defend an individual’s right to keep and bear arms.”

Instead of bemoaning my neighboring state’s intent to try to position themselves in an attractive light to increase their economic prospects, to the deprivation of Colorado, I will instead try to use this moment, as a “teachable moment” for those bumbling fools in the Colorado Legislature, along with the Head Clown, and Ring Leader (HCRL), Governor John Hickenlooper. When you create knee jerk legislative disasters, because of the acts of one MAD man in Aurora, while graciously accepting political funding and advice from NY Governor Bloomberg, these are exactly the consequences you will reap.

I for one, am appreciative of the efforts the City Council of Wellington has taken to ensure the protection of their citizen’s natural right to self defense, while also looking for a better economic position for their community. I only wish those in the Denver Metro Area would take note of what these true public servants and representatives look like, and try to emulate it.

Wellington joins several other local governments in Kansas in passing resolutions supporting the right to keep and bear arms. These are great first steps. Now they need to build on the momentum and turn it up a notch. Cities and counties need to  back up resolutions with ordinances prohibiting any cooperation with federal agents attempting to enforce acts violating the Second Amendment.  Herndon, Kansas has done so and others need to join them.  These ordinances will add another row of teeth to the state law and will let lawmakers in Topeka know you support their stand.

ACTION ITEMS to help make that happen!

1.  Contact your local legislators – County, City, Town – and urge them to introduce model legislation in support of the 2nd Amendment Protection Act.
