A bill introduced in the Alabama State Senate would nullify Common Core and restore decentralized control of education within state boundaries.
Introduced by State Sen. Rusty Glover (R-34) on March 3, Senate Bill 101 (SB101) would terminate all participation with Common Core standards and Alabama College and Career Ready Standards (ACCRS). The bill is the latest pushback against educational standards that some observers see as an onerous federal power-grab that puts American children at grave risk.
SB101 would rebuke Common Core by requiring the following:
The State of Alabama hereby terminates all plans, programs, activities, efforts, and expenditures relative to the implementation of the educational initiative commonly referred to as the Common Core State Standards, or any derivative or permutation thereof, including, but not limited to, the Alabama College and Career Ready Standards which have been adopted or may be adopted by the board or its employees, including any assessments, data collection, and instructions based on or involving any such standard or protocol.
SB101 takes further aim at Common Core and similar programs currently being pushed by federal and corporate interests by terminating “the adoption or implementation of any national standards from any source, or the use of any assessments aligned with them, that cede control of Alabama educational standards in any manner, including, but not limited to, the Next Generation Science Standards, History Standards, Social Studies Standards, or Sexuality Standards.”
Furthermore, the bill reads bluntly that “the state shall retain sole control over the development, establishment, and revision of K-12 course of study standards.”
SB101 must first pass through the Senate Committee on Education & Youth Affairs successfully before it can receive a full vote in the state Senate.
