As reported by Truth in American Education, a bill filed in the Nevada Assembly would “basically void the common core standards” in the state.

Introduced by Assemblymembers Brent Jones (R-Las Vegas), Jill Dickman (R-Sparks), Michele Fiore (R-Las Vegas), John Moore (R-Las Vegas), Shelly Shelton (R-Las Vegas), and State Senator Don Gustavson (R-Sparks) on March 13, Assembly Bill 303 (AB303) would essentially render the controversial Common Core educational standards null and void in the state of Nevada.

The bill states, in part, the following:

The regulations adopted by the State Board of Education… which was approved by the Legislative Commission and filed with the Secretary of State on May 30, 2012, are hereby declared void effective July 1, 2015.

AB303 would take the power out of the hands of unaccountable federal bureaucrats and special interest groups, and put it directly into the hands of the people – where it belongs.

The Constitution is very clear on this issue. The feds have no business meddling in classrooms across the country, or even creating federal standards as they did with the republican-backed No Child Left Behind Act. While we’re not exactly enthusiastic about the state getting involved in education, they are not prohibited by the Constitution to do so, and it is far better than allowing D.C. to dictate what is taught to children thousands of miles away without any practical means of seeking redress.

Rejecting nationalized education standards is the first steps toward bringing true academic choice, and freedom. Passage of this legislation would represent a positive step forward for the people of Nevada and a path for other states to follow.

AB303 has been referred to the Assembly Education Committee where it will need to pass through successfully before it can receive a full vote in the state assembly.
