In this episode, I cover the Sugar Act, the first attempt by the British government to enact navigation laws for the purpose of generating revenue from the North American colonies. While sometimes the Stamp Act is the first source of conflict visited in traditional histories, it is clear that the Sugar Act played an important role in fomenting patriot attitudes toward taxation by Parliament. I also dive into other sources of mounting tension between Britain and the North American colonies prior to 1765, all of which framed the coming crisis.
