I lived outside DC for 30 years; I have been advocating for redistribution of office buildings for years -- both for congestion benefits as well as cost savings on per square foot charges on office space. But, GSA is in tight on a lot of these office contracts, in some cases in a bordering on corrupt way. Think of the money that could be saved! Great column, I will post on Facebook.

Welcome to DC, thanks for leaving. Try any big city north of Quantico, and you'l get much the same.

A few corrections:
The Beltway is not in, or a part of DC. It is in Virginia and Maryland
Buy a GPS - Missing a turn is not a life altering occurrence. We're not responsible for your lack of preparation.
Smoking is generally prohibited indoors in DC.

Shit you didnt mention:
Bag tax - $0.05 for any disposable bag (paper or plastic)
Homelessness - DC City Council continues to ignore, or resolve the homeless problem.
AIDS - 3% infection rate in DC. Its an epidemic
Guns - You are not allowed to protect yourself within the confines of the District
Cigarrette Tax - A pack of smokes is $8.50 in the city
Coming soon - Soda tax - $0.01/oz tax on soft drinks, sports drinks and juice
Bicyclists - flaunt road signs, ignore stops, gladly go wrong way, and are the first to scream "share the road" and throw granola at you.
Cabs - These idiots never do any sense of the speed limit, and are constantly darting in and out of traffic and slow - rolling for a fare.

Public Transportation - Very good, though recently dangerous metro system. Its how you get around in town
Free Museums - Lots of them. The important ones. Think Constitution and Dinosaurs and airplanes and portrait gallery.

To be fair, I live in VA and commute in every day. This city stinks.
