State Department Spreads Democracy. And Money

A friend points me to a recent article on Foreign Policy’s website written by a career State Department employee who spent a year in Iraq trying to “win the hearts and minds” of the Iraqi people. I’ve pretty much become numb to stories about government failure, but this one left me with my forehead planted on my desk.

Here are some of the ideas that government officials actually gave the green light to, using your tax dollars:

  • French pastry classes for Iraqi women.
  • A play about a town’s dispute over “the value of shade cast by a donkey.”
  • A road constructed to facilitate commerce was instead used by insurgents to carry out attacks.
  • A local artist was paid to paint a mural of “oiled, homoerotic Steve Reeves musclemen” on the wall of a gym.
  • Bicycles were bought for impoverished children in a Baghdad neighborhood. However, the roads were too damaged and dangerous for the kids to ride their bikes, so the bike wheels ended up being used on wheelchairs for injured Iraqis.
  • The creation of a Baghdad Yellow Pages even though only 250 businesses with permanent landlines could be found.

I suspect that some readers will respond that the federal government should instead be using taxpayer dollars to build roads and fund the arts here in the United States. However, as we demonstrate over and over again atDownsizingGovernment.org, the federal government does a lousy job of spending other people’s money at home or abroad—period.

Its all about what is popular isn’t it, what some want with out the will to bring it into existence themselves. Popular ideas like going to war without the investigation of why we are going or not willing to go yourself. Or to change a country to a democracy because people actually believe that is what they are and they are by popularity but what they are not is informed and for this reason popular has become for more important. A Democracy does exist and there is no signs of my Republic in any community at this time because of popularity. To do what is popular and not what is known. Knowns only come about by evaluations of results (things done) when this is not the case does ignorance look for the popular idea.

What is popular here must then be popular over there regardless of how unsustainable this nation is. Why not push this everywhere right? We don’t want to be the only failed nation do we? But then money is popular also and look how little is really known about it and the idiots who have perverted what money really is.

Worse yet so many do not ask questions, they will see something I write and think they know it all or refuse to participate on the basis of popular verses the basis of growth.

Intelligence is something we grow in each other by challenging ourselves, to go the extra mile and explore and learn. But again the idea of education is popular as well because people went to school to be trained in what is popular verse investigation and self reliance or independence.

So Yes the state spreads popularity or in the words I have spoken here the state spreads ignorance and so many are willing to jump on the bus to nowhere without a question in the world.

I am an independent thinker and I refuse what is popular and spend night and day digging for the truth to be revealed. My energy is proof I look or why would I be getting so much of it?

The truth does set you free and allows the energy to grow in leaps and bounds, have any or you all out?

The creative ways the government finds to waste my money abroad sound remarkably similar to the creative ways the government finds to waste my money at home. And, gotta say, using a mural of “oiled, homoerotic Steve Reeves musclemen” to try to win the hearts and minds of people in a predominantly Muslim country just defies belief!
