South Carolina’s Health Care Freedom Act, would take important steps towards making Obamacare null and void in the state.
During the 2013 session in Columbia, H.3101 passed the House after many amendments and revisions, but it failed to get a vote in the Senate. During the last day of the session, the vote was stopped by money from Big Insurance. Without that last minute lobbying effort, it would have passed, and Gov. Haley is on record saying she would have signed it.
But the bill didn’t die with the end of the session. It remains alive for 2014 and efforts to get it passed continue in earnest.
Obamacare proponents, and political allies of the president, mostly mocked the efforts to pass H3101. They typically tried to tie nullification efforts to slavery and southern attempts to maintain the institution, making historically inaccurate claims about South Carolina’s actions leading up to that war. They gleefully predicted H3101 was dead on arrival.
Some supporters of nullification also came out against the bill, claiming that as amended, it stepped back too far to be effective.
In response, Senator Tom Davis (S-46, Beaufort) took his subcommittee on a roadshow to gather opinions on the bill, and its amendments. He set up townhall hearings across the state, the last in Charleston, on Nov. 8.
Apparently, Davis has nullification opponents scared, because they brought in the big guns to a recent hearing.
The South Carolina Progressive Network (SCPN), representing Obamacare navigators, and individuals claiming to have already benefited from the law, converged on the hearing in an attempt to overwhelm the debate. They came, armed with misinformation. And they shouted down speakers who pointed out the limits the Constitution places on Washington, DC, the meaning of the 10th Amendment, and the real reasons politicians back universal health care.
SCPN received a grant from the US Dept. of Health and Human Services to train and manage Obamacare navigators. They used taxpayer money to pay Obamacare Navigators to steal the show at the hearing. The SCPN website consists mostly of emotional appeals, historical disinformation about nullification and states rights, and fearmongering that frankly hasn’t been keeping up with current events.
The take away from the H3101 hearings is that nullification efforts are now being taken seriously by collectivists, Big Insurance and Obama administration operatives. The opposition is organized now. This professional well-monied opposition to H3101 means we’re ground zero for stopping the health car act.
