This is the first in a series of lessons on the American Revolution.
In this episode, I set the stage for the Revolution with a breakdown of the various colonies. People tend to view the colonies as essentially homogeneous, but in fact, they differed significantly in their cultures, religions, economies and political views. They also enjoyed a great deal of political autonomy, both from England and the other colonies. In this first lesson, I offer a brief overview of each colony, highlighting its founding, culture and economy. I wrap up the lesson with a summary of the things the colonies had in common.
