rhode-island-state-houseRhode Island State Representatives Trillo, Loughlin, and Gemma have introduced House Resolution 7030 (H7030), which if passed, would affirm “that the people of this state have the sole and exclusive right to govern themselves as a free, sovereign, and independent state and any proposals that impede, diminish, or revoke those rights would violate the form of government we have chosen and breach the United States Constitution.”

The resolution calls on Congress to “to refrain from enacting or imposing any law or regulation that is beyond the scope of these constitutionally delegated powers”

The resolution is part of a growing grassroots movement in state legislatures across the country as a protest to the intrusion of the federal government into state government affairs.

In 2009, 38 states introduced similar resolutions, and 7 states passed them, garnering some significant national media attention for these efforts. Already in 2010, five states have introduced sovereignty resolutions and “the next step,” nullification of specific federal laws, has been gaining traction in states around the country, too.
