The Trump administration has been aggressively pursuing immigration sanctuary cities with new conditions on grant money and in a number of cases currently running through the federal courts. So far the courts have routinely sided with the cities over federal attempts to pull funding. But the administration’s approach is actually exposing one federal law on the books that has served as a roadblock to sanctuary city strategy. Losing this game will make the cities even stronger than they are today.
