Freedom Watch – Nullification! with Tom Woods – 08-07-10

Thomas E Woods on Freedom Watch with Judge Andrew Napolitano.

“States do have a constitutional role – they weren’t meant to just act as doormats to the federal government.

Thomas Jefferson wanted the states to act as the sentinels of the liberty of the people – they would protect the people from unconstitutional federal overreach. Those powers have by and large been stripped from the states over the years and they need to be reclaimed!”

Unauthorized Thoughts

This weekend I had another chance to appear on Freedom Watch on the FOX Business Network (which you may get without realizing it, so check) for a brief segment on nullification.  I appeared immediately after Karl Rove [!], who said state resistance to the federal government was fine by him as long as it was done in a way that “honors our system” — i.e., involves nothing more than “lawsuits” against the federal government, and ignores everything Jefferson ever said about the states and the federal courts.  (The program is repeated tonight at 8pm ET and tomorrow at 7pm and 11pm.)  Last time I was on, it was Geraldo Rivera who was asked for his opinion on nullification.  Judge Napolitano refuses to play by the rules, which is why his star remains very much on the rise.

Next weekend I’ll talk about these issues at a conference banquet outside Philadelphia (August 13; you can register for just one day of the event if you prefer), and at another conference banquet in Orlando (August 14); the latter talk will be taped for future airing by C-SPAN.  On August 28 I’ll be having a full-day event in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Don’t write off all the Tea Party folks, by the way: local Tea Parties and even 912 Project chapters are sponsoring various stops on the Nullify Now! tour, even though such a thing is not exactly front and center on the agenda of the establishment handlers who are trying to keep these groups tame and pointless.

Nullification on Freedom Watch

This weekend I have a chance to discuss my book Nullification on Judge Napolitano’s Freedom Watch program on the FOX Business Network. I got a kick out of it when, in the first segment, the Judge asked Geraldo if he favored nullification. I bet that was the first time he ever got that question.

Lots of good guests on this weekend’s program, which airs at 10am and 8pm ET on Saturday, and 7pm and 11pm on Sunday.

Judge Napolitano, Freedom Watch Premiere this Weekend

Probably the most significant outcome of the Ron Paul presidential campaign was its liberating effect on what was allowable for Americans to say and think. More and more pundits who had once been reliable mouthpieces of Washington’s war propaganda are turning against the Iraq and Afghanistan interventions. The Federal Reserve System, which had been off the political radar since its creation in 1913, is under more public scrutiny than ever before. The Austrian theory of the business cycle, which links the business cycle to artificial credit expansion, is gaining ground every day. Plastic men who give canned speeches about nothing are on their way out. Telling the truth is in.

The intensity of the support that Dr. Paul attracted was a sign – as if we needed one – that a significant minority of the population had no place within the stilted political categories to which media outlets and political operatives have tried to assign every American. What it also revealed, although again already obvious to readers of this site, was that an awful lot of Americans had no home on the cable news networks either, since the typical programming assumed all good Americans fell somewhere along that wondrous spectrum of opinion from Hillary Clinton to Mitch McConnell.

This weekend we have a chance to observe what I hope will be one of the lasting fruits of all this: Judge Andrew Napolitano, senior judicial analyst at the FOX News Channel, will premiere the television version of his program, Freedom Watch. Up to now the Judge’s program has appeared on the Internet only, with occasional rebroadcasts on FOX News Radio. Starting this weekend, Freedom Watch will air four times per weekend on the FOX Business Network: 10:00am and 8:00pm EST on Saturdays, and 8:00pm and 11:00pm on Sundays.

People who like and trust Ron Paul typically like and trust Judge Napolitano. The Judge’s most recent book, the New York Times bestseller Lies the Government Told You, covers everything from the Federal Reserve and the PATRIOT Act to guns, drugs, the FDA, war, and civil liberties, in the iconoclastic, take-no-prisoners style that has made him so popular. On his Internet program (and as a fill-in host for Glenn Beck) the Judge has gone out of his way to feature intelligent and articulate guests whom the rest of the media pass over in favor of that unique race of zombies from which the pundit class is largely drawn. The days of having to sit through the mind-numbing Dick Morris and David Gergen, while resisting the temptation to self-mutilation, may be over.

Let’s hope Freedom Watch becomes the most highly rated program on the entire network. Scratch that. Let’s make it the most highly rated program. Tune in. Tell your friends. Blog about it. Make YouTubes. You can’t put a price tag on having a regular television program hosted by a knowledgeable and persuasive defender of property, peace, sound money, civil liberties, and the rest of the alternatives the American public is rarely allowed to consider. I can hardly believe such a thing is actually going on the air.

The Judge has supported us again and again. Now it’s time for us to support him. Let’s do everything we can to make Freedom Watch a smashing success.
